Swimming in bath water

Day 8

States visited: the rest of Louisiana and Texas

Sites seen: interstate 10

We have arrived at our campsite today a little worse for wear. The car ride and the go go go seem to have gotten to the girls and it hasn’t been the best day. But we’re here, we’ve had some food, our camp is set up, and we got to swim. I’m not sure the swimming really helps because all of these pools are the temperature of bathwater. It was 107* when we arrived here today so we’ll take what we can.

Our car arrived at the campsite a little worse for wear as well. A giant rock hit the windshield on the highway and cracked it. The crack has continued to grow and we will spend tomorrow morning getting it repaired. Other than almost having a heart attack, it’s all good!

Some musings on camping

I miss having a bathroom that is across the hall instead of across the campgrounds.

I miss easy access to ice and water. For the most part, our campsites have water on them, but it isn’t always really cold and we have little access to ice.

I miss having clean feet. It doesn’t matter what I do, eventually I have to take my shoes off to get into the tent. Or I have to wear my shoes in the shower, so they’re wet, and then walk back to the campsite so they get dirty.

All of this to say, I really don’t mind camping. There’s something nice about the simplicity of it all and the lack of distractions everywhere. I’m glad we have this time this summer with the girls to take this trip. I hope they have fond memories of it going forward!

Some musings on the people

I’ve had to work to shed my New England a little bit as we’ve traveled. It took me 30 minutes to check into the campsite today, not because there was a line, but because she really wanted to talk to me and she actually wanted answers. It has been like this since we left New England and has happened more and more as we have traveled south. Now that I am used to it and expect it, it’s quite nice to chat with everyone and find out where they’re all from and what they’re doing. It’s been a nice change of pace.

Tomorrow we will drop the car off and then head into San Antonio to do the River Walk and see the Alamo before it gets too hot. Hopefully no one melts!

Talk to you soon-
